The Jardin d Agronomie Tropicale serves as a quiet, haunting reminder of France s colonial history. Established in eighteen ninety-nine, it began as a laboratory for testing tropical crops like vanilla, cacao, and coffee to see if they could thrive in the French empire. The site underwent a radical transformation in nineteen zero seven when it hosted a colonial exhibition. For that event, organizers built replicas of villages from French colonies in Africa and Asia, and forced people from those regions to live in them as living exhibits for Parisian visitors. Today, you are walking through the remnants of that era, where ruined pavilions and overgrown monuments sit tucked away beneath the trees.
