You are standing near the site of the Hôtel Saint-Pol, a massive medieval royal complex that once dominated this part of Paris. King Charles the Fifth commissioned its construction in thirteen sixty after a violent uprising forced him to flee his traditional residence on the island in the middle of the river. He sought a secure, sprawling refuge that could serve as both a private home and a functioning seat of government, far from the volatile crowds of the city center. The palace eventually stretched across a vast area, incorporating multiple existing manor houses, gardens, and galleries into one interconnected royal sanctuary.
