The orchard you are approaching occupies a site with deep roots in the seventeenth century, originating as a nursery for the neighboring Carthusian monastery. In the year sixteen fifty, a man from Vitry retired to this monastery and began cultivating fruit trees with such skill that the orchard gained a reputation for excellence across Europe. By the early seventeen hundreds, the monks were producing over fourteen thousand trees annually on these grounds.
