The building you are approaching is the Hotel de Pontalba, a grand mansion that serves as the official residence of the United States Ambassador to France. While its stone facade exudes traditional Parisian elegance, the residence was commissioned by an American heiress from New Orleans named Micaela Almonester, Baroness de Pontalba. She purchased the site in the mid-nineteenth century and hired the architect Louis Visconti to construct this mansion, completing the project in eighteen fifty-five. Her vision brought a unique, transoceanic perspective to this elite neighborhood, blending French neoclassical design with a distinctly ambitious American entrepreneurial spirit.
