The Hôtel Perrinet de Jars stands out for its high, arched carriage gate and the rhythmic, understated neoclassical facade that lines the Rue de la Pépinière. Étienne Perrinet de Jars, a wealthy tax farmer, commissioned this private residence in seventeen twenty-eight to assert his status in the growing neighborhood. When the royal tax administration occupied the building decades later, they replaced the interior staircases with heavy vaults to store vast quantities of official currency and sensitive financial ledgers behind the stone walls.
