Madeleine cemetery

The Madeleine Cemetery began as a standard parish burial ground in seventeen twenty, designed to serve the residents of the Sainte Madeleine de la Ville l Évêque parish. By the time of the French Revolution, its location near the Place de la Révolution made it a primary destination for the remains of those executed by the guillotine. The site quickly became a place of mass interments, where hundreds of bodies, including those of King Louis XVI and Queen Marie Antoinette, were placed into unmarked communal trenches and covered in quicklime to accelerate decomposition.
