The Théâtre de la Madeleine features a bright white facade and a classic marquee that clings to the narrow Rue de Surène. Opened in nineteen twenty-four, it replaced an earlier circus and roller-skating rink on the site. The director Sacha Guitry turned this stage into his creative home, writing and starring in plays that kept the house packed through the nineteen thirties. He occupied the theater with such intensity that he eventually had his ashes scattered in the building's own foyer.
