Parc de la Hauteur

You are walking along the Promenade Plantée, often called the Coulée Verte René-Dumont. This elevated parkway is built on the remains of a nineteenth century railway line that once carried steam trains from the Gare de la Bastille. When the tracks were abandoned in 1969, the decaying viaduct became an eyesore in the heart of the city. In a move that many locals originally criticized as a waste of public funds, architects transformed the structure into the world's first elevated linear park, which officially opened in 1993.
