The building standing before you represents a turning point in how society interacts with knowledge. Before its completion in eighteen fifty-one, libraries were typically private extensions of monasteries, palaces, or schools. Architect Henri Labrouste broke this tradition by designing this structure as the first major public building in France intended solely for use as a library. It was conceived as a democratic space where any member of the public could access vast collections of books in a purpose-built environment.
