Paris-Sorbonne University

The Sorbonne began as a modest theological college founded in the thirteenth century by Robert de Sorbon, the chaplain to King Louis the Ninth. He established the institution to provide housing and education for students who could not afford to study otherwise. While it eventually became synonymous with the entire University of Paris, its original purpose was specifically to support secular theology students who were not part of any religious order.
