The Church of Saint-Nicolas-des-Champs began its life in the eleventh century as a humble chapel meant specifically for the servants of the nearby Saint-Martin-des-Champs Priory. Because the priory sat well outside the original city walls, this church served the small community of laborers who gathered in the fields surrounding the monastery, which is how it earned its name, meaning Saint Nicholas of the Fields.
