La Galerie Dior occupies the historic mansion at thirty Avenue Montaigne, a building originally constructed in eighteen sixty-five by Alexandre Colonna-Walewski, who was the illegitimate son of Napoleon the First. Christian Dior chose this site for his fashion house in nineteen forty-six because he felt an immediate connection to the building, which he famously described as a refuge of the marvelous. Within these walls, he managed a small, bustling operation that included just three workshops and a staff of eighty-five people, all tucked away under the eaves of the house. This modest setup served as the birthplace of the revolutionary New Look in nineteen forty-seven, which forever altered the trajectory of global fashion. Today, the gallery preserves this heritage by maintaining its residence in the very rooms where the brand's legendary collections were first conceived and brought to life.
