You are standing near the remnants of a site that began its life in the Middle Ages as an isolated farmstead. Records from the abbey of Saint-Denis in thirteen-twenty first describe the property as a villam externam, or an external farm, situated in the rural landscape between the village of Le Roule and the woods of Boulogne. Back then, this area was a world away from the urban sprawl of Paris, consisting of wetlands and forests that served primarily as a private hunting ground for the powerful.
