Cimetière de Charonne

The Cimetière de Charonne is a rare survivor of a vanishing era in Paris. While most of the city's burial grounds were moved to the outskirts in the early nineteenth century for public health reasons, this small cemetery remained exactly where it has been for centuries, tucked behind the Saint-Germain de Charonne church. It is one of only two churches in all of Paris that still maintains its original parish graveyard, preserving the medieval tradition of burying the dead directly beside their place of worship.
