Quartier d'Oberkampf

The Quartier d Oberkampf holds a history as a former industrial corridor that once connected the heart of Paris to the hilltop village of Menilmontant. For over three hundred years, the main road here served primarily as a transit route for travelers and merchants before it was officially named in the nineteenth century. It honors Christophe Philippe Oberkampf, a German immigrant who rose from a humble textile printer to become one of the most successful industrialists of his era. He gained international fame for founding the royal manufacture in the nearby town of Jouy-en-Josas, where he invented the iconic Toile de Jouy fabric that depicted pastoral scenes and revolutionary events on cotton.
