Place de la République - Square André Tollet

The Place de la République stands on the site of a 14th-century fortress that once protected a gate in the wall built by King Charles the Fifth. Centuries later, Baron Haussmann transformed this location into a vast, rectangular stage for public life during the mid-19th century. He specifically built the massive Prince Eugène barracks here to station thousands of soldiers, a strategic choice designed to exert control over the famously restless, working-class neighborhoods nearby.
