The Tour Jean-sans-Peur stands as a stone record of a violent political rivalry that once destabilized the French kingdom. After ordering the assassination of his cousin, Louis of Orleans, in 1407, John the Fearless, the Duke of Burgundy, found himself in desperate need of a secure residence. He commissioned this tower between 1409 and 1411 as a fortified retreat, designed to keep him safe from potential reprisals while simultaneously projecting his immense power and authority within Paris.
