Fontaine Maubuée

The Fontaine Maubuée has stood as a witness to the evolution of Paris since at least the fourteenth century. Its curious name is a blunt historical judgment, originating from the phrase mauvaise buée or bad vapors, likely referring to the poor quality of the water that once flowed through it from the springs of Belleville. In the year fourteen sixty-one, the poet Francois Villon even mentioned the fountain in his work, immortalizing the site as a common gathering place for medieval residents to gather their daily supply.
