The building you are approaching, the Hotel de Saint-Aignan, has a history that reflects the changing tides of the Marais district. Built in the mid-seventeenth century as an aristocratic mansion, the structure eventually lost its elite status after the French Revolution. By the early twentieth century, the grand halls were subdivided into modest workshops for immigrant artisans from Poland, Ukraine, and Romania. This legacy of the building is honored by a haunting installation, a paper monument on the walls of a lightwell that lists the names and professions of former inhabitants who were deported during the second world war.
