The tomb of Mór Jókai rises as a massive, rough-hewn granite block in the Kerepesi Cemetery. Jókai was the titan of nineteenth-century Hungarian literature, a novelist whose stories once kept the entire nation reading. When he died in nineteen oh four, he received a state funeral that brought Budapest to a standstill. He rests beneath this heavy stone, which mirrors the enduring weight of his prose in the Hungarian consciousness. His pen remains the only decoration carved into the granite face.
