Salgotarjani street Jewish Cemetery

The Salgotarjani Street Jewish Cemetery sits behind a high brick wall, identifiable by the dense, untamed thicket of ivy and overgrown trees that rise above the masonry. Opened in eighteen seventy-four, this site served as the primary burial ground for Budapest’s Jewish elite for decades. Within these gates, the gravestones are carved from granite, marble, and Zsolnay porcelain, reflecting the architectural ambitions of the wealthy families buried here. Architect Vilmos Zsigmond designed the ornate entrance building that guards these final rows.
