Dewanoumi-beya Sumo Stable

The Dewanoumi-beya Sumo Stable is a tall, narrow concrete building marked by a simple, weathered nameplate near the entrance. It holds a distinct place in sumo history because it has produced more Yokozuna, the sport's highest rank, than any other stable. During the nineteen thirties, the stable was so dominant that the legendary wrestler Futabayama trained here, eventually setting a record of sixty-nine consecutive wins. Even now, the sound of wrestlers practicing on the dirt ring inside carries out onto the street.
