The temple grounds hold a massive stone mound marked with a simple pillar, surrounded by the busy streets of Ryogoku. In sixteen fifty-seven, the Great Fire of Meireki killed over one hundred thousand people in Edo. The shogunate ordered this site created as a mass grave for the unclaimed victims, regardless of their status or faith. Monks held daily prayers here for decades to appease the spirits, and the temple remains a sanctuary for both human souls and beloved animals today.
