Hotel Xbalamqué Boutique & Spa

other

The Hotel Xbalamqué is defined by the massive stone frieze wrapping around its facade, hand-carved to depict Mayan deities and scenes from the Popol Vuh. When it opened in nineteen ninety-four, it brought a starkly different aesthetic to the concrete blocks of downtown Cancun. The owner, a local historian and enthusiast of Mayan heritage, insisted on filling the lobby and courtyards with reproductions of ancient stelae and murals. It remains a physical archive of the stories carved into the region long before tourism.
