The white, jagged peaks of the Al Hajar Mountains press right against the harbor, forcing the city to cling to the narrow edge of the water. The Mutrah Corniche follows this curve, lined with matching white buildings and ornate, illuminated streetlamps. Traders once docked their dhows here to offload spices and coffee from Zanzibar and India. Sultan Qaboos Bin Said oversaw the transformation of this waterfront in the nineteen seventies, turning a bustling, crowded merchant wharf into this paved, sea-facing promenade.
