The Old Watch Tower in Muttrah stands as a circular stone sentinel perched on a craggy cliff above the harbor. It was built in the sixteenth century by the Portuguese to spot incoming ships during their occupation of the coastline. Later, the Omani authorities maintained the structure to monitor maritime traffic and defend the port. During the nineteen eighties, a local worker famously lived inside the tower, singlehandedly watching over the bay long after its military role had vanished.
