This waterway follows the original street grid laid out in the twelfth century, serving as the primary artery for transport long before Suzhou expanded its roads. A local merchant named Zhu spent his fortune dredging this specific section to ensure his supply boats could reach his warehouse, changing the flow of trade for families living along the banks for generations.
