The name Lugaojian refers to a sharp, angular bend in the canal network of the Gusu District. It marks the spot where boatmen once faced a notoriously difficult maneuver to navigate the intersection of the waterways. In the seventeenth century, a local scholar recorded that the narrow angle caused constant collisions between cargo ships laden with silk and rice. Merchants eventually funded a small stone foundation to stabilize the bank, preventing the canal wall from crumbling under the pressure of passing heavy hulls.
