The tall, narrow storefront of Huangtianyuan displays a faded wooden signboard, marking a business that has sold traditional Suzhou pastries since eighteen twenty-one. During the Qing Dynasty, its founder, Zhu Bingren, started by selling rice cakes from a simple pushcart before establishing this shop. While many local confectioneries vanished during periods of rapid modernization, this spot survived by keeping the original recipes for delicate, floral-scented cakes. It remains a rare, surviving example of a family-run heritage shop in the Gusu District.
