Forest of Stone Steles Museum

The Forest of Stone Steles houses over three thousand stone tablets, creating a library carved directly into rock. These slabs served as the primary method for preserving Confucian classics and historical records during the Tang Dynasty. One tablet, the Nestorian Stele, details the arrival of Christianity in China in the seventh century, including a list of names written in both Chinese and Syriac. It disappeared for centuries before local farmers unearthed it while digging in the late Ming Dynasty.
