Sanxue Street is marked by a cluster of traditional gray-brick courtyard houses that sit directly against the massive southern wall of the Xi'an City Wall. The street takes its name from three ancient schools—the Confucian Temple, the Guanzhong Academy, and the Prefecture School—that stood here during the Ming and Qing dynasties. In the late nineteenth century, the scholar Li Shichang famously kept his extensive collection of stone steles stored in these courtyards before they were moved into the nearby Forest of Stone Steles Museum.
