The Guanzhong College compound features a heavy stone gate topped with dark, sweeping tiled roofs that stand out against the surrounding urban sprawl. Founded in the sixteenth century by the scholar Feng Congwu, this site served as a center for Neo Confucian study during the Ming dynasty. While many similar academies disappeared over time, this one remained a hub for public debate. Feng famously invited commoners to attend lectures alongside officials, a practice that drew the ire of local authorities and eventually led to his forced retirement.
