Armenian Church of Surp Takavor

religious

The Armenian Church of Surp Takavor features a distinctive arched entrance topped by a stone relief of the Virgin Mary and the Christ child. Built in eighteen thirty-three on the site of an older wooden structure, the church served the growing Armenian community in Kadıköy. During the September pogrom of nineteen fifty-five, a mob set fire to the building, burning the interior and destroying the roof. The church reopened in nineteen sixty-four, after workers completed an extensive restoration of the fire-damaged stone walls.
