The stone tower of Saint George’s Church in Everton stands as a jagged silhouette against the Liverpool sky, topped by a distinctive crown of pinnacles. Designed by Thomas Rickman in the eighteen twenties, it was one of the first buildings to use cast iron for the structural framework of the nave. When the church opened, it served a wealthy congregation that lived on the hill. During the Blitz, a parachute mine landed nearby, blowing out every window and leaving the shell scorched.
