Everton Brow features a sharp, limestone ridge that drops steeply toward the River Mersey. This high ground provided the natural vantage point for Prince Rupert of the Rhine to establish his camp while besieging Liverpool in sixteen forty-four. The local legend says he climbed this ridge, looked down at the town, and questioned how such a place could hold out against his army for so long. His frustration lingers in the name of the nearby Prince Rupert’s Tower, a stone lockup built later.
