St George's Hall

St George's Hall displays a massive wall of Corinthian columns that run the entire length of its eastern facade. Built in the mid-nineteenth century, it served as a multifunctional venue for both the city’s assize courts and its grand musical festivals. When the architect Harvey Lonsdale Elmes died at age thirty-three, he left behind a structure that cost nearly triple his original estimate. City leaders were so desperate to finish his vision that they ignored the escalating budget to complete his soaring, limestone design.
