Wellington's Column

Wellington’s Column stands one hundred and thirty-two feet tall, topped by a bronze statue of the Duke of Wellington looking toward the Irish Sea. Built between eighteen sixty-one and eighteen sixty-three, the fluted column commemorates the Duke’s victory at Waterloo. During the construction, workers discovered a subterranean passage beneath the site, likely an old smuggler's tunnel or an entrance to a medieval well. The column remains, but the secrets of the dark passage below stayed buried under the foundation stones.
