Museum of Liverpool

The Museum of Liverpool features a wide, limestone-clad facade shaped like a giant, angular accordion stretching along the waterfront. Opened in twenty eleven, it replaced a series of disjointed maritime exhibits with one central home for the city’s social history. When workers excavated the site, they unearthed the remains of the seventeen seventy-four Mann Island dry dock. Instead of covering it up, architects incorporated those exact stone blocks into the foundation, anchoring the modern structure directly onto the old port’s bedrock.
