The Cavern Club

The Cavern Club is defined by the three massive brick arches that curve deep into the cellar below Mathew Street. Originally a jazz venue opening in nineteen fifty-seven, it soon became the home of the beat music scene. When the Beatles played their first lunchtime set in February nineteen sixty-one, the club smelled of sweat and coal dust. The air was so thick with humidity that the walls famously dripped with condensation, sometimes forcing the band to cut their sets short.
