Liverpool Cathedral

The red sandstone walls of Liverpool Cathedral rise over the city with a jagged, fortress-like silhouette that defies the traditional grace of English Gothic. Giles Gilbert Scott began this project in nineteen oh four when he was only twenty-two years old, an architect with no completed buildings to his name. He proposed a design with two massive transepts and a central tower that eventually became the heaviest in the world. Workers finished the final section in nineteen seventy-eight, seventy-four years after the first stone.
