Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral

The Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral features a high, circular nave topped by a lantern tower made of jagged, colorful stained glass. Architects and locals call it Paddy’s Wigwam because of that conical shape and its prominence in the city’s Irish Catholic community. The structure replaced an abandoned, partially built design that had sat as a massive, empty stone crypt for decades. When the current architects finally finished the space in nineteen sixty-seven, they centered the altar in the middle of the congregation.
