Liverpool Town Hall

The copper dome atop Liverpool Town Hall sits high above the city, crowned by a gold-leaf statue of Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and trade. Completed in seventeen fifty-four, this building served as the seat of local government and a lavish ballroom for the merchant elite. During its construction, the original architect John Wood watched his design suffer a devastating fire. While the interiors were gutted, the stone shell remained, and the city rebuilt the halls even more opulently than they were before.
