Eleanor Rigby Statue

monument

The Eleanor Rigby statue sits on a stone bench on Stanley Street, clutching a handbag and staring down at a copy of the Liverpool Echo. Tommy Steele, the entertainer, donated this bronze sculpture to the city in nineteen eighty-two. He modeled the figure after a fictional woman, but his work inadvertently caused a stir. Local residents soon pointed out that a real Eleanor Rigby is actually buried in the graveyard at Saint Peter's Church, just a short walk away from this bench.
