Orme Square Gate Lodges

The Orme Square Gate Lodges stand as a gateway to a private enclave that emerged during the early nineteenth century. This area was developed by the engraver and property speculator Edward Orme, who purchased the land in 1820. Before these Regency-style homes appeared, the site was known as a pitted, marshy stretch of farmland often called Cockpit Field because of the extensive gravel beds carved out of the earth over the preceding centuries.
