the Design Museum

The Design Museum occupies a building that began its life in the early nineteen sixties as the Commonwealth Institute. This landmark structure is famous for its dramatic copper-covered hyperbolic paraboloid roof, an architectural feat that was considered a radical engineering statement when the building first opened. For over a decade, the site sat vacant and largely forgotten before a massive renovation project allowed it to be repurposed into its current role as a global center for contemporary design.
