Lord Holland Statue

The statue of the third Lord Holland sits on a red granite plinth, depicting the politician in a relaxed, seated pose with a walking stick in his hand. This posture was not an artistic invention but a direct reflection of his real life, as he suffered from chronic gout for many years. His familiar, informal way of holding his staff during conversations became a signature trait that the sculptors, George Frederic Watts and Joseph Edgar Boehm, chose to immortalize in bronze. The statue was completed in eighteen seventy, funded entirely by surplus money left over from a separate collection intended for a memorial in Westminster Abbey.
