Known as Whiteleys, this structure opened in its current form in 1911 as one of London's first grand department stores. Its founder, William Whiteley, arrived in London with only ten pounds in his pocket before building a retail empire that became a household name. He envisioned a space where a customer could purchase anything from a pin to a full suite of furniture, earning himself the nickname of the Universal Provider.
