Great Exhibition

The Great Exhibition of eighteen fifty-one transformed this landscape into the site of the world’s first truly global fair. Spearheaded by Prince Albert, the event aimed to showcase the industrial and artistic prowess of nations from across the globe. What rose here in Hyde Park was an architectural marvel known as the Crystal Palace, a temporary structure that stood as the largest enclosed space on the planet at the time. It was constructed with a pioneering modular system of prefabricated cast iron and over two hundred and ninety thousand panes of plate glass. This design allowed the building to be assembled in just nine months, creating an interior so bright and airy that it required no artificial light to illuminate the massive displays of nineteenth-century innovation.
