49 Belgrave Square

Number forty-nine Belgrave Square stands apart from the uniform terraces surrounding it as a detached four-story mansion. Completed in eighteen fifty-one, it was designed by the master builder Thomas Cubitt, who earned a reputation as one of the most prolific figures in nineteenth-century London architecture. The house was originally commissioned by Sidney Herbert, a government official who christened it Belgrave Villa, though it was later widely known as the Independent North Mansion because of its solitary position on the corner of the square.
