The Embassy of Spain occupies a grand detached mansion at number twenty-four Belgrave Square known as Downshire House. Built between eighteen forty and eighteen fifty, this Grade One listed building features striking Palladian architecture that anchors the corner of the square. Long before diplomats walked its halls, the house served as the residence for Lord Pirrie, the chairman of the Harland and Wolff shipbuilding firm. It was within these very walls in nineteen oh seven that plans for the infamous Titanic were first discussed between Lord Pirrie and the managing director of the White Star Line. Today, a table originally commissioned for the ocean liner still stands in the embassy dining room, a silent relic of that fateful meeting.
